The colours of mid-April

Cowslips and stitchwort

Yellow, white and green. If you look around our countryside right now, these are the predominant colours, alongside the browns of the earth and the trees.

In the hedgerows, the white blackthorn blossom is over and it leaves are pushing through, but the hawthorn blossom has not quite ready to show its face. It won’t be long though. As we wait for our hedges to once again sing with flowers, we can look down to see the beauty of dandelions, cowslips and stitchwort, and, in and amongst the grasses you can even spot some sweet violets.

Yellow oilseed rape is in full bloom, but other fields are looking neat and tidy as the earth awaits other crops to show their heads.

It won’t be long now before the glorious month of May brings us bluebells (actually there are already a few eager flowers out), and I just hope that the rain decides to give us a break so we can get out more and more to enjoy all the joys of Spring in Suffolk.
