It’s the 9th April and, until today, we’ve been revelling in some gorgeously sunny weather with blue cloudless skies. Sure, it’s still a bit chilly, but it is only April! Here are a few of the wonderful sights in and around our village that we can all enjoy.

IN THE GARDEN

From daffodils to hyacinths, hellebores to . . . hmm, some kind of black and green iris (anyone know what this is?), our gardens are starting to come to life. In our pond, the moorhen mum is sitting on 6 eggs, and not all the frogspawn has yet been eaten by the ducks. On a more annoying note, the muntjac deer that has taken a liking to our garden decided to uproot a newly planted rose and eat another rose.
The birds are busy, with blue tits, great tits, long-tailed tits, goldfinches, robins, blackbirds, spotted woodpeckers and more all enjoying our bird feeders.

IN THE HEDGEROWS, VERGES AND WILD BITS

With white blackthorn blossom in full throttle frothiness, you know that winter has gone. More and more trees are starting to come into leaf, and spring wildflowers are such a joy in April and May. These are just some of the flowers I captured on my walk yesterday. My favourite? The fritillary. Just wow!

IN THE FIELDS

It might be early in the year, but the fields are starting to show some good growth. Yellow rape flowers are already in full bloom in the sunnier spots (the shot below is a cheat – it’s from last year), field beans have their heads well above ground now (can’t wait for the flowers as they give off my most favourite perfume!), as have wheat and other crops that I can’t yet recognise. We really need a farmer to write this section!
